I was recently inspired by watching the BBC Green Sport Awards and am overwhelmed by the incredible efforts sportspeople and teams are making to tackle climate change. One story that really struck me was that of Imogen Grant, BBC Green Sport Awards Athlete of the Year. Not only did she win Olympic gold in Paris this year, but she has also used her platform to become a passionate advocate for sustainability
Her experiences as a rower opened her eyes to the environmental degradation happening in our rivers. She spoke about rowing past floating nappies, used feminine products, and seeing dead fish—all signs of the worsening climate crisis.
As a result, she co-launched the Clean Water Sport Alliance and became an ambassador for the Rivers Trust. It was a reminder that no matter our profession or passion, we all have a role to play in protecting the planet.
This also made me reflect on my own habits. While I may not have everything eco-friendly at home just yet, I am now thinking more carefully about my choices. As Christmas approaches, I’m determined to make this holiday season as eco-friendly as possible by sourcing sustainable products for gifts. Whether I purchase them from my own shop or elsewhere, I want to do my part to make a positive impact.
It’s inspiring to see athletes like Imogen Grant take action, and I’m more motivated than ever to follow their lead in making greener choices in my daily life. This Christmas will be a time for giving back to both loved ones and the planet. Let's all aim to make a difference, no matter how small!
